If elected in November this year, a Liberal Nationals government will reserve the majority of the former Gas and Fuel land in Highett for community use.
Together with local sporting clubs, associations and residents the Liberal Nationals will consult about the future use of this land which will include the provision for sporting grounds and community recreation and open space areas.
Additional commuter car parking for both Southland and Highett railway stations will also be included on the site.
Against the wishes of the local community, the Andrews government plans to sell this land and erect 26 metre high residential towers on it. The Liberal Nationals will ensure this space is kept for local sporting clubs and recreation.
Unlike Daniel Andrews who has decided to give a massive $225 million of taxpayers’ money to the AFL to upgrade Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Nationals are getting behind local sporting clubs who need our support.
At a time when local families are feeling the squeeze of the Andrews government’s new ‘plan’ for Melbourne, which will force even more inappropriate development into Bayside and Kingston, this currently vacant land could provide much needed recreational space for local residents.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:
“If this land is sold and developed by the current Labor government, it is gone and gone for good.
We will protect this area from inappropriate development so current and future generations of Highett can have a fantastic recreational park. We don’t want to see a situation where Daniel Andrews ignores the local community and proceeds with erecting 26m high residential towers on this land.
The choice for local people couldn’t be clearer. Daniel Andrews and Labor’s plan to sell this land or a Liberal Government that will reserve this land for the enjoyment of local families.
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Sandringham, Brad Rowswell:
“Since October last year, I have called on the Andrews government to reserve this land for our community. Setting aside the majority of this land will ensure that residents in Highett and neighbouring suburbs have access to much needed community recreational open space for generations to come.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Mordialloc, Geoff Gledhill:
“The Andrews Government knows full well that the community wants this land retained for urgently needed public uses, such as recreational space and commuter parking, yet it has chosen to ignore them.
Retention of this land for community use is an essential step in providing for the current and future needs of the cities of Bayside, Kingston and Glen Eira.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Bentleigh, Asher Judah:
“Our new park just south of Moorabbin will provide more open space for local families and new sporting grounds for our young athletes.”
