The Liberal Nationals are committed to rail under road solutions for level crossings along the Frankston line.
Unlike Labor, who can’t be trusted, we will ensure that already promised level crossing removals at Cheltenham, Mentone, Bonbeach and Edithvale are delivered as rail-under-road.
Daniel Andrews and Labor have lost control of congestion across Melbourne and is reverting to ugly cheap Skyrail to try and manage our clogged arterial roads.
After 15 of the last 19 years of Labor governments, Melbourne’s roads are choking with traffic congestion due to out of control population growth.
A Liberal Nationals Government will also eliminate level crossings with rail-under-road solutions at Chelsea Road, Chelsea, Argyle Avenue, Chelsea and Swanpool Road, Chelsea in our first term.
On parts of the Frankston line and the Caulfield to Dandenong corridor, Labor lied before the 2014 election promising rail-under-road but delivering Skyrail.
It is understood that Labor has not yet signed contracts for work on many of these crossings, including Cheltenham and Mentone. If Labor is re-elected, it will surely revert to its favoured Skyrail.
At Carrum, Labor has contracted for the level crossing and intends to build a massive, ugly and intrusive Skyrail. If elected, we will, if possible, renegotiate the existing contracts for a rail-under-road solution; we will not tear up the contract. If construction has begun, we will not tear down the Skyrail.
We will also re-open Eel Race Road restoring a level crossing and allowing people who would otherwise be landlocked to cross to the Nepean Highway.
Labor remains under pressure in the Edithvale/Bonbeach corridor to revert to its planned Skyrail and can’t be trusted by the community after the treacherous behaviour of Labor post the 2014 election.
Four years ago, Labor promised to grade separate the Cheltenham crossing at Charman Road and Park Road and the crossing at Balcombe Road Mentone.
Four years on, nothing has happened. Plans have not been confirmed and contracts have not been signed.
The Liberals will also work with the City of Kingston on its structure plan proposals for Cheltenham and Mentone shopping centres including additional parkland access and improved car parking. These have pointedly not been endorsed by Labor. This is because Labor fully intends to build Skyrail if re-elected.
As Liberals, we will negotiate with the City of Kingston and incorporate their plans into our rail-under-road solutions at Mentone and Cheltenham. We will also investigate options for removing the Warrigal Road level crossing as part of the scheduled Mentone works.
Only the Liberals have a clear plan to get back in control of population growth, ease congestion on our roads and deliver rail under road for Melbourne south east.
Comments attributable to the Shadow Minister for Public Transport, David Davis:
“Only the Liberal Party can be trusted to deliver rail under road. Labor loves Skyrail and is determined to use it at every opportunity.
It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get these level crossing removals right. After what Labor has done at Seaford, Victorians and locals have every reason to demand that we get this right.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Carrum, Donna Bauer:
“We will re-open Eel Race Road allowing all those stranded by Labor’s plan to access the Nepean Highway.
Labor’s Skyrail will scar our coastal community and is not welcome in Carrum.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Mordialloc, Geoff Gledhill:
“Labor lied once and will do it again. They cannot be trusted on Bonbeach and Edithvale. The community are quite rightly very concerned that an Andrews Government would not hesitate to impose a Skyrail on the Frankston line as it did on the Dandenong line.
Labor has had four years to deliver on promises from the last election and has done nothing aside from drive up our cost of living and sit back and watch our streets become less and less safe.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Sandringham, Brad Rowswell:
“For four years, residents and traders at Cheltenham and Mentone have had nothing but uncertainty around the level crossing removal works. Labor cannot be trusted.
The Liberals will put rail-under-road and investigate options for removing the Warrigal Road crossing.
We will also investigate options for additional car parks at both stations and better connectivity to shops and parkland.”
